All dancers are challenged in finding and engaging the correct ballet muscles to maintain their maximum turnout. Try this exercise to help you find and control your turnout muscles. Standing in 1st position plie, place your hands on the lowest point of your gluteus maximus, where it connects to the inner thigh muscles. While keeping your tailbone pointing down, activate and deactivate the gluteus maximus and inner thigh muscles feeling them tense and relax several times in a row. Make a mental connection of these ballet muscles working, add the muscles from the base of the spine to the back of the knee and you will begin to find and be able to maintain your maximum turnout!
